OS
A few years ago, I decided to move away from Windows after countless attempts to make WSL 1 and 2 fit my workflow. Nothing compares to the native Linux experience, especially for development. It is fast, simple, and has everything I need, not to mention, setting up a dev environment is almost hassle-free.
Along the way, I tried Ubuntu before switching to Fedora, which I’ve been using for a few years now and highly recommend. It is easy to customize to your needs and, at least for me, outperforms Ubuntu in several ways.
I set up a dual boot on my laptop with Fedora as my primary OS for almost everything and Windows. I barely touch Windows anymore, only occasionally to play a game (as a father of two, free time is limited), but other than that, it’s Linux all the way.
Software
- Visual Studio Code is my editor of choice. I use a curated set of project-specific extensions, equipped with the IDX Monospace Dark theme and Fira Code (with ligatures).
- Gist for a complete list of my active editor extensions.
- Terminator is my go-to terminal. I have tried several others, but Terminator fits my workflow perfectly.
- Oh My Zsh I absolutely cannot live without this! It makes terminal life incredibly easy. Combined with plugins like
z,autocomplete, vscode, andgit, it makes shell interactions a pleasure. - AI (various tools) of course, who isn’t using it these days? I mainly treat AI as an assistant to enhance my workflow rather than let it take over. It helps me find solutions much faster than scrolling through Stack Overflow, though I still find myself wandering back to the old, familiar forums from time to time.
- Brave I use a wide range of browsers for testing, but Brave is my daily driver. Still waiting for the next big thing…
- Spotify for music.
- Todoist to keep my tasks organized.
- Google apps like Gmail, Keep, Calendar, and Drive.
Workspace
Desk
- Asus VN279QLB as my primary display.
- Lenovo x1 still running incredibly smoothly after a few years.
- Logitech MX Keys Mechanical Mini - brown switches I upgraded to this from the standard MX Keys. I was already a huge fan of the original, so when they announced a version with mechanical switches, I immediately jumped on board.
- Logitech MX Master 3s my tool to click. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this one. I had to replace my first one after just 6 months, and my current one is showing signs of wear after 1.5 years. I am currently looking for a reliable alternative.
- Corsair MM200 does an excellent job of keeping my desk surface soft and comfortable.
- Giraffe Tech N8 helps clear desk clutter and raises my laptop screen to a more ergonomic height.
- Sony WH-1000xm3 an outstanding pair of headphones! I’ve owned them for years and only had to replace the ear cups once, and the Wicked Cushions are actually much more comfortable than the originals.
- Nothing Ear (1) for when my ears get too warm, though I still prefer the sound signature of the WH-1000XM3s.
- Kjeld keeps me comfortably seated instead of sitting on the floor.
- Stubberget monitor arm for a clean, floating display setup.
- Custom DIY Desk designed and built by myself because I always found standard desks lacking in space.
- Razer Deathadder V2 to click when MX Master 3s fails.
